Doris Smith v. County of Monmouth

A federal court jury awarded an African-American female employee, Doris Smith, $3,000 in back wages and $35,000 for pain and suffering in a discrimination lawsuit filed by Ms. Smith against her employer, the County of Monmouth. Ms. Smith alleged that she was discriminated against when she applied for a job as a Job Training and Placement Officer in Monmouth County’s Human Services Office in Red Bank. She was passed over twice for the position, despite the fact that she had prior job experience and met all the criteria.

As the parties were heading toward the punitive damages phase of the trial, in which the jury could have awarded additional damages against the County, the County decided to settle Smith’s claims. As part of the settlement, the County agreed to pay for the damages awarded and for Smith’s legal fees and settled her case for $150,000.
